Holburn Grange - Holburn - Swinhoe Lake - St Cuthbert's Cave. Better than forecast, overcast with bright periods, mild, very little wind. Ron, Sandy, Alex, George B, Ashley. |
Beth - off riding a camel (in Tunisia) Excuse of the yearBernie - skiing Evelyn - pulled leg muscle skiing Mike and Michelle - too busy Carol - didn't want to walk the full distance (bad foot) |
Very hard to find the car park. Very muddy, fast walk - completed 7.5 miles in 3.75 hours. The hunt was out minus one hound. Saw a chair with no view. Did not meet anyone else. Nice lake with boats on - we didn't go swimming in it. There was a collapsed house, and some funny place names - Dick's Oldwalls and Detchant Coalhouses. Climbed two barbed wire fences only to find stiles further along. St Cuthbert's Cave was held up by a plinth of rock. There was a stone memorial to the Leather family. Ashley surmised that if (aka Jennifer Saunders) they had not been good then it would have been "hell for leather". Wildlife: Lots of birds, chaffinches, wrens, pheasants and robins. Some sheep took an interest in us. |
The Ridley Arms, Stannington. Joined by George G, Carol and Evelyn. A bit short on vegetables. Six people had bland sponge pudding with blackberry sauce (actually very nice). |
