Wolsingham Station - Stanhope Station by the Weardale Railway. Then walked to Frosterley (on the south side of the Wear) on the Weardale Way - then to Wolsingham along the river bank. Unseasonably warm, sunny with some cloud later on. Carol, George B, Michael, Michelle, Ron, Sandy and Beth. |

Talkative, friendly and informative train conductor, and a friendly driver as well, who let us go into the driver's cab. A lot of people came on at Frosterley. Looked round Stanhope Station - well-fitted loos. Crossed the footbridge (NER) over the fields on to Weardale Way south with the odd deviation due to exceptional map-reading skills. Lunch below an old peel tower. Beth fed the sheep. The map was wrong - the path diverted via rabbit hill quarry, with poor signing and jammed gates. Stopped at the Black Bull in Frosterley, and sat outside in the sunshine. Michael complained about his cider and was given a seminar on ciders. Headed downstream over the largest footbridge we had ever crossed. Spent about ten minutes feeding three russet piglets, two males and a female, who were very friendly and squealed a lot. Passed a caravan park and had a look at some luxury caravans for sale. Had afternoon tea on a big log, during which the train passed and the driver waved at us. Wildlife: butterfly, ladybird, lots of colourful hens, guinea fowl, turkeys, partridges, blue tits, dipper, ducks, gosanders, horse, rabbits, spectacular cockerels, chaffinch in a car mirror. |
South Causey Inn (Stanley). Joined by Evelyn. Good menu. Sloping table - Ron's meal tried to escape. |
