Comments

Lots of bikes en-route, which made the journey west of Richmond very slow.

Haymaking was in progress. We saw lots of meadows full of flowers. We also found a shopping list lying in a field. There was a long slow ascent in the heat. We encountered lots of very thin stiles with strong springs. It was very dry underfoot with several streams dried out, and the River Swale was discoloured with peat.

There were lots of people about, mainly strolling or walking dogs. We had our lunch stop at Kisdon Force waterfall where we miffed a photographer trying to get a picture of the sparkling water.

We passed the remains of Crackpot Hall and the associated mine workings. Later we stopped off at the Farmer’s Arms in Muker for some refreshment before the final stretch.

Birds: Wagtails, chaffinch, various sorts of sparrows, yellow finch, oyster catchers, wheatear, pheasant, black-headed gull, herring gull.

Meal

Bowes Incline Inn – nice meal, good value for money – joined by Evelyn, Michael and Michelle.
