Comments

Very pleasant walk, with good views of both Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake. Steep climb up to the lunch stop, at Barf after passing The Clerk. Good view of the lake and Skiddaw at lunch and a wedding in an old church on the other side of the lake. The guests arrived in an old bus. No sign of any ospreys.

Ashley wore very short shorts dating back to his schooldays. As the elastic was dodgy, he wore an equally old pair of swimming trunks underneath (both stayed up). The Clerk and The Bishop were white painted stone above the Swan Hotel. George G met the rest part of the way round. Sandy retraced her steps to the scenic viewpoint only to find that there wasn't one. Very boggy in places, especially where there was a lot of sphagnum moss, which sprayed water up everyone's legs.

Wildlife (not a lot): Deer, crows, skylarks, magpies, cuckoo heard. Very pretty cotton grass. Noticed a lot of hawthorn blossom coming back. Too may humans.

Evening meal

The Keelman, Newburn. Good friendly fast service, and good food.
