Cultivation terraces and a smell of good food at the start. Lots of colourful gorse. Two large cows, and sheep with spiral horns. Lost the path going through the wood. Met a lot of people. Had lunch in Scotland with good views to the north, but it wasn't warm and jackets were required. Joined the Pennine Way. Went to Trowupburn (Ashely's comment - "Throwupburn") where we watched a big bull servicing his harem. Steep climb up past a hill fort in the woods where we had afternoon tea. Descended through a nice gorse-lined path to Cushieside Hall. Spent some time at the memorial to RAF crews killed in plane crashes in the Cheviots between 1939 and 1946. Inscription - "Quo fas et gloria ducunt per ardua ad astra" - Where duty and glory lead through adversity to the stars. Returned along the road along the side of the College Burn to the car. Wildlife: 5 herons, hellowhammer, curlew, skylark, swifts, chaffinch. |
The Dyke Neuk. Ashley went to Evelyn's concert (Evelyn let George off this time). |
