Very windy. There was a short sharp shower early on just as we left Melrose, which ceased as soon as Ron had got his waterproof trousers on. Prolonged sunny periods during the afternoon. There was less wind lower down.

Walkers

Lance, Julie, Ashley, Ron, Sandy, George, Diane, Richard, Martin, Jeanette.

Excuses

Bernie - at a retirement do.

Evelyn - going to a concert.

Michael and Michelle - ripping up the kitchen floor.

Comments

We were joined by Martin and Jeanette from Gattonside. We climbed up through the trees in the Rhymer’s Glen. We had to detour around a large fallen tree. There were good views of the Eildon Hills.

We ate our lunch in a relatively sheltered spot at the edge of the forest. Once we emerged into the open we met a howling gale in our faces, which we had to endure for about a quarter of an hour until we had passed Cauldshiel Loch and started to descend towards Abbotsford. There were white tops on the loch. We passed a cowshed with a large bull, several cows and two newborn calves – a bit smelly – also a couple of horses feeding off a bale of hay – again a bit smelly. We heard the sound of a piper emanating from Abbotsford. We couldn't get a cup of tea at the visitor centre at Abbortsford because of a wedding reception but managed a loo stop.

There was the sound of police sirens in Galashiels. We made a short detour at Tweedbank to inspect the new railway line to the Waverley, and passed a 19th century chain bridge just north of Melrose. We walked by the abbey as we made our way back to the cars.

We noticed that it was a close end to the rugby match at the Greenyards: Melrose 13 Ayr 14. We were treated to afternoon tea and coffee at Jeanette’s and Martin’s new house at Gattonside.

Wildlife: two buzzards, ducks, gosander, swans, cute springer spaniels.

Meal

King’s Arms, Melrose – a pleasant meal.
