"The Craster Crawl" (another of George's wet walks!). We worked out how to take remote pictures - managed to get it right! Lots of geologists on the beach - at least, people looking at rock formations. Walked over the rocks to see the Victorian bath. GG went in the bath. Nice sheltered lunch spot within earshot of kittiwakes and with some interesting rock formations. Put on our wet weather gear as it started to rain as we left this site. Soaked by the time we got to Craster, so we went into the pub to dry off. GG then bought some kippers and a crab. A lively discussion on navigation.

Sneaked into the grounds of Howick Hall by the back entrance. Lots of colourful bushes (which we didn't really see because we hadn't paid!). Returned by the Long Walk (which we would not have been allowed to walk on the second Wednesday in February) back towards the beach, where we had afternoon tea. On the final stretch a helicopter came out of the mist

Wildlife: Lots of snails, some with blue shells (two snogging). Coal tits, skylarks, great tit, eider ducks, shell ducks, kittywakes, robin, gannets, mallards, wagtails, oyster catchers, rooks, heron. Bumble bee, squashed frog, lots of rabbits and a big hare.

Gorse bushes in dazzling bloom, red campion, blubells, forget-me-nots, field of tulips (white, pink, purple), lots of primroses, rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, pieris. Also saw a face on an old yew tree.

Evening meal

Keel Row, joined by Michael and Michelle, who regaled us with tales of their adventures in Egypt. Meal O.K., nice ice cream.
