Braithwaite - Grisedale Pike - Hopegill Head - Whiteside - Crummock Water - Buttermere. Short walk - Buttermere to Buttermere Moss and back. Hot at the bottom, freezing at the top (-6 degrees wind chill). Sunny and very windy. George B, Ashley, Ron. George G and Evelyn did the short walk. |

It got colder, the higher we went. Excellent views of Dumfries, Isle of Man and Workington. Lots of people - several in shorts (don't they feel the cold?). A manic fell-runner with a not-so-manic dog. The descent from Hell - sharp rocks, scree, steep - it saw off Ron's bootlaces. Could not find an obvious route round to the far side of Crummock Water. George B went paddling. Wildlife: Two lone sheep, and one coughing with its coat falling off. Lots of black lambs. Meadow pipit, wheatear, robin, and heard a woodpecker. Black lambs trying to adopt a black horse. GG and Evelyn only managed to see a bee and a worm. There was an Alvis sports car at Buttermere, and also a 1920's Austin. Had home made ice cream at Buttermere |
Bowes Hotel, joined by Mike and Michelle. Basic menu, very ordinary. Cold pub, and cold first course. Nice spotted dick pudding. |
