Comments

The Aynsleys came the long way via Knaresborough and Harrogate and got into a hold-up. As a result we went into a tea room and Carol spent £60 on two watercolours - but saved £10 by bargaining!

Very interesting walk, with varied scenery: riverside, fellside, gill, moorland track. Lots of lovely houses, especially Hartlington Hall, and farm buildings. Lunch on a shingle beach with flat stones. Basking shark at lunch spot (rocks and water formed an illusion of a shark's mouth opening and closing). Untidy farms. Passed a hill peppered with rabbit holes - some rabbits fighting. Climbed up through Trollers Gill - lots of climbing ironmongery. Afternoon tea spot at troll's cave (Carol's overactive imagination pictured herself living there). Water sink - burn disappeared underground. Gateway blocked with giant boulders - probably put there by a giant troll. Old hall converted into a barn. No bats out of Hell at the Hell Hole.

Wildlife: Hundreds of ducklings, walking on water. Lots of sand martins, swallows, possible owl sighting in Trollers Gill, dippers, yellow wagtail, pied wagtail, sparrows, black-headed gull, lapwing, curlew, chickens, black lamb, and yellow snail. Flowers: marsh marigold, yellow (Chinese) poppies.

Evening meal

Ravensworth Arms. Variable quality of meals. Nice to below average. Beth had a huge ice cream and didn't offer any to anyone else.
