A short 8 miles, as Ashley (recovering from broken ankle) and Evelyn (just back from the Aegean) completed the walk. At the start Ron and Sandy saw the same bikers that Sandy had met at Belsay. Steep start through the woods, lots of felled forest. Lunch was under the canopy of the trees, sheltering from heavy rain. Tea cooled by raindrops. There was a smell of pine from the felled timber and also a smell of mushrooms. Passed by a black labrador being walked by a forestry worker in a van. A second friendly labrador gave Ashley a kiss and preferred him to a Polo mint. We climbed up to the Three Brethren, where there were good views in all directions, though we were nearly blown away. Met three or four people on the way up, one of whom resembled Clint Eastwood. A disappointing Peel bridge, where a snooty horse declined Sandy's mint. Nice afternoon stop by the river. Attractive walled garden at Yair, with a Chinese bridge over the footpath. Yair farm had a sheep maternity ward. Lots of yellow gorse, sorrel, bluebells, rhododendron (pink and deep red), and forget-me-not. Wildlife: slugs and leeches, centipede, bluetit, mallard, sand martin, shelduck, dipper, pied wagtail, pair of eider ducks. Attractive black hens with white eyes.
