Route

Great Bavington – Plashetts – Hawick farm – The Shield – West Harle – Great Bavington

Weather

Surpisingly dry, much better than forecast – windy – no drizzle – only a few drops. Temperature about 7 degrees C. Big skies – much admired by Bernie.

Walkers

Ashley, Bernie, Michael, Michelle, Ron, Sandy.

Excuses

George - injured foot.

Comments

There were ten cattle grids on the walk, some of which were flooded. The penguin from Wallace and Gromit was tied to a bench. It was very damp underfoot – very boggy. There were many rickety stiles and gates.

We passed some foxhounds in their compound. We didn't see any other walkers, only one farmer.

It was an anti-social lunch – everyone spread out and Bernie had no stone to sit on. Bernie had a prize giving. The happy cow flashlight was won by Sandy and Michelle got second prize of a happy cow chocolate for coming up with a limerick.

We passed a URC church dating back to 1725, which was the third oldest church in England, but it was locked so it wasn't possible to look inside. There was a box outside for contributions from walkers. We also saw Easter Cottage, which had been a school in the 17th century while the old manse next door had been a youth hostel.

There was an optional tearoom at Kirkharle at the end.

Wildlife/flora:

Real peacocks and peahens, fieldfares, chaffinch, pheasants running up hay bales.
Pandasheep – one field with all-white sheep with black faces and one black sheep with a white face. Young calves.

Tiny yellow mushrooms. Tree covered in fungi.

Meal

Twin farms, Kenton Bankfoot – very nice meal. Joined by George and Evelyn.
