It wasn't as wet as we had expected. There were only one or two really muddy bits, but we experienced a lot of up and down walking. We passed a famous person, Robson Green, who was with a friend. We viewed the renowned sycamore tree on Hadrian's wall from just about every angle. We had a sheltered lunch spot. The leader avoided taking us to the pub at Twice Brewed, but we had a good look at the new visitor centre which was under construction. Michael gave Ashley and Bernie a history lesson on Hadrian’s Wall. Bernie was given a sweet by a stranger. We weren't allowed to use the loos at Vindolanda without paying the full entry fee for the museum. We had a photo stop beside signpost pointing to Rome, 1170 miles away. There were nice green cycle signs on the Coast-to-coast route. We passed a fairy grotto in an old tractor tyre and a statuesque duck. We debated whether it was artificial, until it moved when we got too close. There were lots of sheep – some very fluffy as if washed and blow-dried. A few winter crops were in evidence.
