Comments

The entrance to the car park was camouflaged by a covering of leaves. We had some good views of the Cheviots. There were stunning autumnal colours and it was surprisingly dry underfoot for the time of year. As a result there was a lot of irresponsible kicking of dead leaves.

We passed a small stone memorial to M.E.J. dated 1993 and the stone remains of the disused Barleymill, before taking the wrong track up from the river just below Tindal House. After having climbed up a way we had to come all the way back down to the river. We couldn't find a footpath round the foot of the garden of the house.

We ate our lunch in a fisherman’s hut at the riverside. There were seats for everyone in the warm sunshine – it was almost too hot. Some fish were jumping.

Richard took a tumble in a turnip field and got muddy, while Ruby rolled in something fragrant. We met several other dogs including a young Weimaraner. We were surprised to find a field with flowering rapeseed and another field with the barley crop not yet taken in. We passed a LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) farm.

On the way back we saw a rectangular stone well marked with a stone cross, which we had not seen on the way out. There was an impressive ornamental stone façade at the side of the Ford-Etal road.

Wildlife: We either saw two deer twice or four deer. We also saw two hares, a heron, four swans, two dippers,a barn owl, mallards, a robin and possibly a bittern.

Meal

The Plough, Eachwick – joined by Evelyn and Ashley (eventually). Ashley mis-read his e-mail and headed to Stannington for the meal instead of Stamfordham. Enjoyable meal, with Chinese food available on the menu. Good service.
