Walk leader

Route

Main walk: Birdoswald Car Park to Moscow (almost) via Gilsland and all the way back again - not quite as planned.

Saga Walk: Round Birdoswald fort, then via the milecastle to the Roman Bridge and back.

Weather

Glorious weather.

Walkers

Main walk: Lance, Julie, Ashley, Bernie, George B, Ron, Sandy and Beth.

Saga walk: Carol, Evelyn and George G.

Apologies and Excuses

Alex - at the seaside

Mike and Michelle - returning from holiday

Comments

The Popping Stone held no secrets for us - we worked out fairly quickly how it had been named. Lance couldn't get anyone to join him on the Popping Stone. Beth got stuck in the clarts. Good lunch spot in the shade.

Crossed the River Irthing several times - couldn't remember which bridges we used to cross them. Well-preserved stretch of Roman Wall with bridge abutments, milecastles and turrets. Beth slid down a long slide and nearly ruined Ashley. Tall sunflower and big tomatoes, as well as some weird fungi.

A tale of three walks. The leader lost three of his troops, who had left their mobile phones at home. We retraced our steps looking for Ron, Sandy and Beth who were sunning themselves back the car park. They had found a short cut back via Gilsland Spa. A helicopter circled the car park several times.

Wildlife: Deer (documented), heron, geese, woodpecker, barking border collie.

Saga Wildlife: bullfinch, ladybird, painted lady butterflies.

Evening meal

The Highlander, Belsay, for the second month running. Lots of haggis on the menu.
