We had a steep climb at the start, up the steps to Whitton Tower. It was built 1785 to provide work for the umemployed. The going was muddy, with many fallen trees. There were tree surgeons out clearing up. Also there were lots of molehills, and gorse We had to lift Ruby over three stiles. We hunkered down behind a wall for lunch, where we had good views of Rothbury. There was snow on Cheviot. We passed a 2000-year-old hill fort with 6000-year-old ring and cup markings nearby. We walked anticlockwise round the fort by mistake. We were buzzed by three very loud F-15 fighters from USAF Lakenheath. It was sore on the ears. Wildlife: Lots of ducks at the car park– Mallard and Muscovy. One Muscovy duck was very tame and came up to us for food. Herons, pheasant, grouse, skein of geese and a blackbird. Rabbit, horses and Shetland ponies. Lots of serviced sheep including one black one. |
