Dorothy and Evelyn came over to the island with us. Dorothy wandered around the village and went into a café to read her Kindle, while Evelyn did some painting, then visited the Priory. There were wicker sculptures of a lapwing, a large butterfly, and an artic tern on the edge of the village. We passed close to the castle before heading north towards a white pyramid structure and some old limekilns. We found a sheltered lunch stop at Coves Haven next to the high cliffs at Castle Point. There were beautiful wide beaches, especially getting towards low tide, but it was hard work walking through soft sand. We had a long walk back along the causeway in the rain, with boggy marshland on the sides of the track. Ken was very visible with his yellow Disney cagoule, which did not survive the wind. Wildlife: Fulmar, curlew, meadow pipits, pied wagtails, kittiwakes, oystercatchers, snipe, sand martins by holes in a sandbank. Several Jellyfish the size of dinnerplates, a dead Portuguese Man o’ War and several crabs – all exposed by the tide going out. Seals. Flora: A variety of wild flowers. |
