We passed a lot of dogs and their walkers at the start as well as fishermen cowering in little tents by the side of the reservoir. We crossed the long dam to the viewpoint and plaque before descending to Derwent Bridge, where we saw a kingfisher. We walked through the fields to Muggleswick, encountering several unusual and awkward gates en-route, including a metal gate within a larger metal field gate. Many of the stiles were insecure and in need of repair. We saw the remains of the monastic grange. Lunch was eaten in the graveyard of Muggleswick Church, the first time that we have eaten in a graveyard, but a good sheltered spot. However, we couldn't find the grave of the giant, Edward Ward. There were lots of lambs around. We saw a triple tree and young trees growing out of metal cages just above Muggleswick. Out second stop was at the Punch Bowl Inn in Edmundbyers, which also had a nice selection of locally made jewellery and fine scarves for sale as well as some paintings. The last section was muddy and not easy to navigate. We passed a new campsite with wooden pods equipped with jacuzzis, where the lady in charge offered us a cup of tea. Wildlife / Flora / Fauna Kingfisher at Derwent Bridge, red kite, two llamas (one brown, the other black and white), flock of black sheep (one of which looked really evil with his long horns). Rabbits, wren, grouse, greylag geese, partridge, lapwings, curlew, robin, dipper, skylark, crows, rooks. |
