We were joined by Martin and Stevie. It was Ruby’s first walk – very cute dog, and wanting to be friends with everyone. Jedburgh was very busy with a seven-a-side tournament (there seemed to be more people in the beer tent than spectating the rugby) and a fair. The walk went along the side of the Jed Water through a redstone gorge and the river Teviot, going through the woods to Harestanes Woodland Centre where we had lunch. En route we crossed a couple of spectacular bridges - a bouncy suspension bridge and a new wooden bridge. There was a strong smell of garlic by the riverside as well as a profusion of bluebells. Lots of spring colours. The water level was low on the rivers. Ruby played with a Jack Russell Patterdale puppy called Beryl at the outdoor café, where a Science Festival was also taking place. Portable Camera Obscuras were being demonstrated to the children. After lunch, Ron, Sandy and Ruby left us to return home and we continued uphill to Peniel Heugh with its Waterloo Monument. On the return journey we saw a fish catch a fly. We didn't meet any other walkers. Total distance walked: just short of 12 miles. Wildlife / Flora / Fauna Heron, swans, mallards, herring gull, sand merlin, song thrush, yellow hammer, blackbird and rooks, mayfly. |
